The Brazilian mining company, Vale, took advantage of panic in the state of Minas Gerais to obtain an emergency work authorization. After raising the alarm of an “imminent risk of public calamity,” residents were driven from their homes. Following a poorly conceived and ultimately unfeasible operation that benefits one of its mines, a piece of Atlantic Forest has been devastated and a community remains traumatized.
