LSM Dictionary

Deafness in Mexico

There are an estimated 1.8 million deaf individuals in Mexico today.

Many of these deaf men and women live outside of large cities, and do not have access to expensive or specialized institutions or tools for learning LSM, the national Sign Language.

Video offers special utilty in the teaching and learning of visual languages in rural areas.

With partners in Oaxaca and Mexico City, we have been investigating best practices in LSM education with a special focus on visual materials and community involvement.
